How to measure your artwork
A good frame starts with an accurate measurement. It takes two minutes and a tape measure.
1. Measure the artwork, not the old frame
Take the artwork out of any frame or sleeve if you can, and lay it flat. Measure the paper, canvas or object itself, not an existing frame, mount or piece of glass.
2. Width first, then height
Measure across the top for the width, then down one side for the height. Use centimetres if you can, to the nearest millimetre.
3. Check it in more than one place
Paper and canvas are rarely perfectly square. Measure the width at the top and bottom, and the height on both sides. If they differ, use the larger figure and mention it to us.
4. Decide what you want to see
With a mount, the window overlaps the artwork by a few millimetres on each side so it is held in place. If there is a signature, a title or a deckled edge close to the border that you want to keep visible, tell us, and we'll size the window around it.
5. Unusual pieces
Objects, medals, jerseys, textiles and canvases need depth as well as width and height. For these, request a quote and send us a photo, or bring the piece into the studio and we'll measure it with you.
