Picture framing for antique oil on boards

This board required special attention as it dates from the early 19th century. Over time it has become bowed from years of temperature and moisture changes. We had to make a custom spacer that would accommodate the bow in the board. We needed this so it would fit snug in its new frame and help keep it in it’s current shape. The frame is a simple 20×30 box frame. Gesso was used to seal and give the fame a smooth surface for gilding. We gilded 24 karat gold onto the red bole highlight colour. The side is wenge bole that was burnished and lacqured. No glass was used as we wanted the board to breath. Atmosphere changes could have an adverse effect on this particular piece.
